Our Story

Founded in 2024 as a branch of the HLC Counseling Center, the HLC Maternal & Family Mental Health Research Center was created to advance culturally responsive research, consulting, and advocacy focused on the well-being of underserved families.

Current Research
The HLC Maternal & Family Mental Health Research Center is currently conducting a qualitative study to explore the effectiveness of the HUSSH Method, a 5-step anxiety awareness and mindfulness practice designed for individuals and families. Grounded in culturally responsive care, this study investigates how the HUSSH Method supports emotional regulation, anxiety awareness, and family communication in underserved communities.Participants engage with a guided reflection worksheet that introduces five core steps: Hold Space, Understand, Sit With It, Speak It, and Heal. The study seeks to capture participants' lived experiences using the method and gather insight into how mindfulness and emotional expression can promote personal and relational healing. This research is part of our commitment to advancing holistic and accessible approaches to mental health that honor culture, community, and connection.
